Sattwa Goes Organic
In 2005 Sattwa entered a new chapter when a commitment was made to go Organic. It was a
long time coming, relatively speaking; but nothing is really out of time. The simple fact is
that we lacked the confidence to make the shift to organic in the beginning. Chai itself was
not yet widely appreciated in North America; and organic products were more expensive and also
not as widely accepted. Creating a new category, being low on both capitalization and experience,
we decided to first get established in the market.
The early years, as for most start-ups, were pretty fierce. It was the inevitable Rite of Passage.
Through it all we survived…and thrived…and grew strong.
Chai took off. Dozens of chai companies came and went. And Sattwa, though often under capitalized
in the beginning, found a solid market for a high quality premium product in the Specialty Coffee
Philosophically and life-style wise, we have always been aligned with the principles of organic
farming and living. Sattwa is a family owned and operated business. We’re all natives of Oregon,
and live on fertile farmland in the foothills of the Oregon Coastal Range Mountains. We grow
organic fruits and vegetables, and our children have been raised to honor and trust Mother Nature.
It is difficult to comprehend the changes that took place in farming methods of the 1940’s.
Traditional practices of meticulous seed preservation and emphasis on care of the soil through
wise composting and crop rotation were discarded, and replaced by a dependency on unnatural
chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and a short-sighted scientific philosophy that discredited
the inherent Wisdom of Nature. Thousands of years of traditional farming wisdom was virtually
scrapped within a decade with devastating results. Rapid depletion of soil nutrients and the
release of thousands of carcinogenic chemicals in the food chain have resulted in a steady,
dramatic, decline in our quality of life. Finally, beginning with the consciousness revolution
of the 1960’s, the tide has slowly begun to turn in favor of Life and the Wisdom of Nature once
Once again a growing number of folks are choosing to live more closely aligned and attuned to
the beautiful intelligence of Nature. We’re delighted that finally after several years of growing
our business we are able to make this shift and provide a wholesome, healthy chai for our friends
and customers. Sattwa Chai is now 100% organic, and we will remain this way. We are also the only
national chai to not use any natural or artificial flavors.
